Tech Unleashed: 2024 State of IT Insights on Dec 19, 2023įor the last few years, Peter has been doing a State of IT panel at SpiceWorld, and I usually take a ton of pictures of the slides with even more notes that I want to do topics and articles on.And such principle is too often ignored (, especially or most often when abusing of spreadsheets). In IT software portfolio management, I say that it is one responsibility to select an appropriate software solution, configuration and deployment for intended task and use case. Such different edition may then probably work more reliable even when storage will be on a Synology FS series NAS. There should exist other editions better suited for use in a networked environment. So when using it in a networked environment, I would expect to occasionally run into troubles due to latency and other network issues. That edition is not intended for use in network environment. I know of Intuit QuickBooks 2020 Desktop but don't have experience with it. Let me know if you think of anything else! ![]() I'm going to touch base with him and I'll report back here what is missing. I found out one of my friends is running nearly the exact setup that I'm trying to run, with VPN, and not having any issues. They are very used to just using QB on their laptops from home with VPN for the last 5 years. I don't want to run a Remote Desktop to local machine scenario, because it will be difficult for the accountants to email reports if they all have to login to their emails every time they remote into that machine. And now that I've simplified things by eliminating the Domain Controller and switched the VPN back to the router's authentification, QB will now longer work over the VPN. And through some combination of all these things, the QB Databases would be allowed to open through the VPN. I think if I reconfigured the VPN to authenticate that way again, and put the client laptops back in the domain, I'd be able to open the Quickbooks databases again.Īll of this must have been setup in a way that the VPN could authenticate through the Domain Controller or Windows 2016 Server, and the laptops on the domain had access to that original shared drive/folder where the Quickbooks databases lived. ![]() The original VPN used to authenticate via the Domain Controller or Windows 2016 Server. I connected the new router's VPN and could not access the Quickbooks shared folder on the PowerEdge R420. I fired up the old Domain Controller on a PowerEdge R420 and found a laptop that is still connected to the domain. Please let me know if anyone has a solution or needs more info. Maybe there is a port issue? Not sure why Quickbooks opens the database at the office and won't do the same over the VPN. I can have the client computer at the office on a different network and VPN to our network and the database still won't open if I'm using the VPN. Would anyone happen to know why we suddenly can no longer open the QB database residing on the Synology over VPN? Also, it's not just when using the VPN from home. The only thing that's changed is the Server, from Windows 2016 Server running on a PowerEdge R420 to running only a Synology FS2500. Now the client computer runs Quickbooks great in the office, with mapped drives to the Synology NAS, but when trying to VPN from home, the Quickbooks database on the Synology NAS will not open. ![]() We recently changed from storing the QB database files on a Windows 2016 Server installed on a PowerEdge R420 to now storing the QB database files on a Synology FS2500 NAS. However, this is what we've been doing for years and it has been working fine. I have found that it is not recommended to have Quickbooks 2020 Desktop Version on a client computer at home and VPN into the office, where the Database files are stored on a NAS. ![]()
